Academic Resources

Reading Resource

We are committed to helping your child become a successful reader. The Superkids Reading Program used by our kindergarten through second grade students is a comprehensive reading and language arts curriculum with phonics at its core. In addition to this highly effective and research based program, Kathy Johnson is our reading resource teacher helping students improve their literacy skills.  Our school has chosen to use a test called DIBELS to help us examine how your child is doing in learning important reading skills. This test is administered individually by Mrs. Johnson, to all kindergarteners and first graders at least three times a year. In second through sixth grades it is administered if a teacher or parent requests more information about their child’s reading skills.

Much like using a thermometer to take a child’s temperature, is an indicator of overall health, the DIBELS subtests is an indicator of how well a child is doing in learning a particular reading skill. DIBELS is used to determine the reading skills of millions of children throughout the United States. The scores tell us whether a child is likely to be ‘on track’ for learning to read or whether a child may need some help in learning important reading skills. Your child’s teacher will use the information to better help your child. For example, a DIBELS test may tell us that we need to spend more time teaching your child how to ‘sound out’ unknown words.

DIBELS is also used to identify children that may need extra help to become good readers and check up on those children while they receive extra help to make sure they are making progress. Mrs. Johnson has small groups that meet up to three times a week that address specific reading skills. As progress is being made, parents receive information about their child’s progress.

If after a significant amount of interventions with a student indicates that little progress is being made,  then interventions will be intensified and other options will be discussed with parents. If the team feels that there is a possibility of a disability in reading the process called “Response to Intervention” (RTI) will be documented and presented to our liaisons in the Scottsdale Unified School District through the direction of Mrs. Johnson.

Math Resource

We are committed to helping your child be successful in math. Susan Alpers is a full time math resource teacher helping students improve their math skills. As with reading, every kindergartener and first grader is given the DIBELS Math screening three times a year, administered individually by Mrs. Alpers. DIBELS Math consists of measures of Early Numeracy, Computation, and Concepts and Applications.

DIBELS Math helps identify students that may need extra help in math to be successful in the classroom. Mrs. Alpers works with these students in small groups, monitoring their progress and communicating this progress with the classroom teacher and parents. If there is a student that after a significant amount of interventions indicate that little progress is being made then interventions will be intensified and other options will be discussed with parents. If the team feels that there is a possibility of a disability in math, the process called “Response to Intervention” (RTI) will be documented and presented to our liaisons in the Scottsdale Unified School District through the direction of Mrs. Alpers and Mrs. Johnson.

Title 1 Math Program

Title I is a federal program that provides supplemental instruction for students who demonstrate educational need and who live within a school attendance area that has been designated as a Title I school by the public school district.  Title 1 must be directed toward students who are not meeting state academic standards. These students have demonstrated the greatest academic need and exhibit factors that place them at risk for failure.

Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutoring is available from the members of the Our Lady of Perpetual help Catholic School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS).
