The Role of the Sacristan

In order for the members of the faith at Our Lady of Perpetual Help to take their full, conscious and active part in the liturgy, someone needs to gather the items necessary for mass and to place them in accessible areas for the celebration.  Additionally, someone needs to insure that these items will be available for future celebrations of the Eucharist, which is the Source and Summit of our lives as  Christians.  This someone is called the SACRISTAN.

The sacristan is responsible for insuring that prior to each liturgy all elements necessary for that celebration are ready:

  • The Altar is Set.
  • All vessels for the mass, bread and wine, cruets, etc.
  • Church Environment is Appropriate.  Heating, Cooling, Lighting, Sound.
  • Sufficient Ministers and Servers are available.
  • Any Special Requirements for the celebration.  Worship aids and vigil candles.
